Step #2: Flexible Grouping

Flexible grouping allows students to be appropriately challenged; but at the same time, it allows for working in different groups so that a student isn't labelled as being in the "slow" group always. The grouping of students should be looked at from time to time as their skills develop.

Tips for grouping

  • Be flexible with the groups and allow for change
  • The number of groups need to be manageable for the teacher
  • If the number of the groups are not manageable, try to get another adult to take a group (Learning Support Teacher, Principal, ESL teacher, etc.)
  • Use levelled materials
  • Requires good classroom structures, routines, organization
  • Work smarter...Not harder.
